PHRASEOLOGY IN LEARNER ACADEMIC ENGLISH: CORPUS-DRIVEN APPROACHES

The paper combines learner corpus research with contrastive analysis to test the applicability of corpus-driven methods to the study of phraseology in learner academic English. It explores phraseological patterns in English L2 academic texts written by Czech university students in comparison with English L1 novice and expert writing. Three corpus-driven approaches are employed: frequency lists, keywords and lexical bundles. The results indicate that a combination of corpus-driven methods can indeed serve as an effective starting point for the contrastive study of phraseology, highlighting potentialareas of under- and overuse of multi-word patterns in English L2 novice academic texts. However, in order to give a more comprehensive picture of learner academic English, quantitative methods have to be combined with qualitative contrastive analysis

Zpráva o zničení Lidic šokovala obyvatele všech kontinentů po celém světě a jméno Lidic zůstalo dodnes celosvětově známé. Účelem této studie je interpretovat velmi významné období v dějinách českých zemí z hlediska jejich historického vývoje, a také z pohledu soudobých protektorátních médií, ale rovněž na základě obrazu britských médií a z hlediska české historie a amerického tisku. Studie má interdisciplinární charakter, neboť se týká nejen oblasti historické vědy, ale i historie a zároveň navazuje na mediální studia. Studie byla provedena s pomocí obsahové analýzy, komparativní historické analýzy a analýzy diskurzu. Nejvíce nás zajímá, jak bylo reflektováno zničení Lidic v médiích a jaké aspekty byly předmětem zvláštního zájmu, jakým způsobem bylo místní obyvatelstvo zobrazováno a jaké charakteristické rysy byly obyvatelům Lidic přisuzovány.The news of the destruction of Lidice shocked people of all the continents throughout the world and the name of Lidice has remained globally known until today. The purpose of this study is to interpret a very important period in the history of the Czech Lands from the point of view of the contemporary Protectorate media, but also from the viewpoint of the British and American press. The study is interdisciplinary as it relates not only to the field of historical sciences but at the same time it is linked to media studies. The analysis was carried out with the help of content analysis, comparative historical analysis and discourse analysis. At the core of our interest here is the way the reflection of the destruction of Lidice was presented by the media, what aspects were of particular interest, in what way the local population was depicted and what characteristic features were attributed to Lidice inhabitants

Marcela Vejsová, Ph.D. Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Biological and Medical Sciences Backround: The aim of this bachelor thesis was to summarize the findings about meningococcal infections and their originator - Neisseria meningitidis. Further this bachelor thesis should provide infomation about progression in meningococcal vaccines development, treatment and diagnostics. Main findings: N. meningitidis spreads into the human body from nasopharynx, through the epithelium it travels into the bloodstream. Severity of meningococcal infection depends on a strain of meningococcus and on strenght of immune system on the side of a host. Meningococcus has got efective tools for invading human body, they are called virulence factors. Quick recognition of clinical signs and rapid confirmation of infection originator are important when the infection breaks out. Nowadays we can prevent meningococcal infection by effective vaccination - combining meningococcal tetravalent conjugate vaccine and meningococcal serogroup B vaccine. Participial adverbial constructions have received a lot of attention as means of complex condensation – a function associated in particular with their use in academic prose. Here the choice of a participial clause1 (as opposed to a fi nite clause) is governed by interplay of a number of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors. The corpora of spoken academic English make it possible to investigate the way participial constructions are employed in academic spoken monologue. Modern Methods of Detection and Features Extraction of Optical Disc from Retinal Images

Diplomová práce se zabývá testováním metod automatické segmentace pro detekci optického disku. Pro analýzu se využívaly datasety Clarity RetCam 3, Envision RetCam 3, Phoenix ICON, Data Drive a Data Stare. Celkově bylo zpracováno 232 snímků sítnice dospělých pacientů a dětí s onemocněním Retinopatie nedonošených (ROP). Počáteční částí bylo manuální zpracování obrázků, kde výsledkem byl zlatý standard. Klíčovou částí byl návrh algoritmů pro zpracování obrazových dat. Nejprve byl obraz předzpracován s využitím metody CLAHE a Bilaterálního filtru. Aktivní kontury bez hran tvořily algoritmus segmentace. Metoda využívala volně se deformovatelných křivek. Výsledkem byl binární obraz, který se porovnával se zlatým standardem. Rozdílnosti mezi metodami byly vyhodnocovány pomocí evaluačních parametrů. Došlo tak ke zhodnocení efektivity metod segmentace pro různé zobrazovací modality. Na závěr bylo vytvořeno grafické uživatelské rozhraní pomocí programu MATLAB.The master thesis focused on testing the methods of automatic segmentation for detection of optical disc. Datasets Clarity RetCam 3, Envision RetCam 3, Phoenix ICON, Data Drive and Data Stare was used for the analysis. Altogether, 232 images of retina of adult patients and children diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) were analyzed. The first part was a manual processing of the images, where the golden standard came as a result. The core part was a proposal of algorithms for processing the data images. Firstly, an image was preprocessed using the method CLAHE and Bilateral filter. Active contours without the edges were used to make the segmentation algorithm. The method used freely deformed curves. The result received from this action was a binar imagge, wich was then compared to the golden standard. The differences between the methods were evaluated based on the evauation parameters. Therefore, the effecivity of methods of segmentation for different displaying modalities were evaluated. Diplomová práce řeší problematiku přidávání R – materiálu do obrusných vrstev asfaltových vozovek, konkrétně do vrstvy SMA 11S. Je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. V teoretické části je popsáno využití R – materiálu při recyklacích vozovek, typy recyklací a způsob řešení této problematiky v České republice, praktická část se zabývá návrhem tří druhů asfaltových směsí s různými přidanými poměry R – materiálu, popisem provedených empirických a funkčních zkoušek na asfaltovém pojivu a navržených asfaltových směsích a výsledky těchto zkoušek.Diploma thesis deals with adding R - material to the wearing asphalt courses, specifically to the SMA 11S. It has two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes using R - material in the recycling of roads, different types of recycling and how is this problem handled in the Czech Republic, the practical part deals with the design of three kinds of asphalt mixtures with different added ratios of R – material, describing empirical and functional tests on the bitumen binder and the designed asphalt mixtures and the results of those tests.
